Back in July 2014, a conversation began with Judy Brett, Dur-E Dara and Mary Crooks. They were inspired by what Victorian colonial women did in 1891 to press their claim for voting rights (in what became known as The Monster Petition). They asked themselves - could we provide a mechanism for huge numbers of Australian women, men and children to give voice to their concern about the almost total lack of national leadership on securing a safe climate? Well, they did and over 71,000 peopled signed. On Wednesday 3 November the Monster Climate Petition was handed to Parliamentarians in Canberra. Subsequently a letter was delivered to every leader at the Brisbane G20 summit. On behalf of our fellow citizens, nationally and internationally, we call on you at this important gathering to show bold and decisive leadership on the issue of climate change. We want it clearly known that Australians are concerned about climate change and want to regain our position and our self-respect, as one of the nations of the world taking a lead on this issue, not languishing second last, one step behind Saudi Arabia in the list of countries and their action on climate change. The petition is still alive for a second tabling in August ahead of the Paris Climate Summit 30 November to 11 December. Please visit this page and print, sign, share, pass it on, then mail back completed petition pages to the Victorian Womens Trust. Www.monsterclimatepetition.au
