Back in my day, we had a hobby called DXing - listening to shortwave and other bands of radio broadcasting, and also trying to obtain QSL cards identifying the sations youd hear. Youd record the freq, time, and announcement of the station broadcast, then mail a letter to the station in hopes they would return a QSL card. The more you got the more you could show off along with the equipment and antennas you would collect! It was lots of fun, and there were clubs, both in school and beyond school you would join; trade, buy and sell equipment, and on and on! An article about it
