Back in the 50s when I was a kid, I often walked the track along a sparsely used branch of the Southern Pacific. Though I only rarely saw a train run through, I always marveled at how well maintained the track was. The roadbed was smooth. There were no weeds on the right of way, they rock ballast was laid just so, the track was securely spiked, the rail joints securely bolted and the rails themselves in good condition. This smooth track was a Southern Pacific hallmark and it was obvious the company took pride in its property, equipment and personnel. The company seemed to realize that its continued profitability depended on dependable and efficient operation so maintenance was a priority. These days, corporate culture has become one of greed, cutting corners is a norm in many industries from petroleum to transportation to public utilities (which are monopolies in the territories they serve). This is why some form of of government regulation, especially in the areas of public safety and utility rates are necessary. When the government doesnt properly enforce accountability we see disasters such as the oil rig explosion and pollution of the Gulf of Mexico by British Petroleum. It has still not been cleaned up to any meaningful degree and the millions of people whose livelihoods disappeared and whose health was ruined have really not been proportionally compensated. They pretty much got off very lightly. I really happen to feel that some people should see prison sentences but that wont happen as long as the huge corporations control our former representative democracy. The constitution of this country has been thrown in the rubbish bin of history by these greedy few. When are we going to wake up and take back our country? Why do we re-elect those who are bought and paid for or toss them out and vote in those who belong to a party which is against the very things that public opinion polls show that the majority of citizens are for?
