Back in the 90s - when I lived on the East coast and only wrote part-time (commentaries, guest columns, etc.) - I was covering the long-protested removal of a huge pile of thorium-tainted soil that had been left on the corner of a suburban N.J.. neighborhood (across from a farm stand a little league baseball field) and covered by an equally huge tarpaulin (that was supposed to protect the area residents). When they finally decided to move it, they did so by rail across the middle of the country to Nevada. I recall calling the Department of Energy and asking for a map that would show the train route. As I anticipated it might, a train carrying the soil derailed (in Sterling, Illinois). Area residents were told not to worry, that there wasnt anything of concern on the train. Obligingly, I wrote a short commentary to the local paper advising of the reality of the tainted soil. My point here is that communities along the truck route of this toxic material should be aware of whats coming their way (since, as with Sterling, Illinois, theyll never be told the realities) and should voice their united opposition. Why is it going to Canada? Canadian citizens need to ask their leaders at all levels of government that question and discover who was paid what - for money has surely changed - or will change hands. Thanks Jim for the post and comment!!
