Back in the day, record companies would release samplers of artists signed to them. While they usually sported a charting single or two, they were mostly a haven for B-sides, alternate takes, and tracks from lesser know artists. They also tended to be cheaper than other albums, and for all these reasons, I loved them immensely and snapped them up whenever I could. One of my first, and favorites, was called Theodore: An Alternative Music Sampler. This was in 90, before the alternative label was in wide (over)use. Plus, it had my name on it! I mean, how could I resist? For many of the artists on Theodore this was my first real exposure to them: Kate Bush, Poi Dog Pondering, Toad the Wet Sprocket, 3rd Bass, and so on. Even already-favorites like Public Enemy and Living Colour had a presence. One of the bands that I curiously never followed up on was Big Dipper. This track was a definite highlight for me, but I could never find the band, in record stores or libraries, so I kind of forgot about them. Still, this poppy gem about reincarnation always lifts me up and makes me bop around when I hear it. I may have to do some digging, now that we live in the everything-anytime digital age.
