Back to school is an exciting time and as a parent I look forward to structure and routine reentering our lives. Tonight though, reviewing the paperwork that has come home Im disappointed about a very lacking subject missing from my 5th graders daily agenda. Where is the Social Studies or History time during the day? Oh no, we must focus on math and reading to get prepared for the MAP testing. Are you kidding me with this right now? The condition of history and geography in the elementary classroom is one of great concern. Social studies is rarely included as part of the curriculum and, if it is taught, relies upon a conventional and canonical perspective that ignores historical scholarship and excludes multiple perspectives. More so now,it seems that it is altogether just forgotten. I suppose its time to sit down and write a letter, it will most definitely be in cursive. In the meantime while your teaching my child the ridiculous ways of think math,I will handle the lessons on Louis and Clark, Harry Truman, and Bloody Kansas. #Mevs.BoardofEducation
