Back to the BasicsFrom the Very Beginning: God the Father, Son and Holy SpiritGenesis 1:1In the beginning God created...John 1:1-4In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.Genesis 1:2...And the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.Genesis 1:26-27Then God said, “Let US make mankind...These scriptures set forth that before there ever was a universe or world, there was God. For us as mankind, the beginning came at the creation of the world. For God, there never was a beginning. He comes before all things and through Him all things were made. He is revealed to us in the scriptures as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. In Genesis 1:1 we see God, Elohim which is the plural word for God at work in creation. It is not to be understood that there are three gods but the Godhead in three persons, a trinity represented as being one God in unity. The Bible doesnt debate this mystery, it only declares it. In 1 Peter 1:2 we see the Father recognized as God. In Hebrews 1:8 we see Jesus recognized as God, and in Acts 5:3,4 we see the Holy Spirit recognized as God. Matthew 28:19 tells us to, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. It tells us to baptize them in the name (singular) of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, not names (plural). Ultimately, these are truths that we cannot fully explain with our finite minds. They have to be accepted by faith. However, there are analogies that may help. For instance, in the universe we have space, matter, and time yet one universe. In time we have past, present, and future, yet one time. In man, we have body, soul, and spirit yet one man. What is so remarkable is that the same Father, Son and Holy Spirit who enjoyed complete love, fellowship and unity through eternity past before the creation of this world shares that same love with us. He invites us to take part in the salvation He offers today so that we may share here to eternity with Him. Thats a forever promise from a forever God. What a great assurance to know that the same God who created us, loves us and gives Himself completely to us in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
