Back to work. I miss the moseying of Arizona and the time I had to contemplate. But there is excitement and critical decisions and associates to discuss treatment protocols with and to assist and be assisted by. The brotherhood and sisterhood of veterinary medicine is unique in all the world. There is excitement and drama sorrow and joy and adventure and compassion and learning mentally and spiritually at every turn at the clinic. Yesterday Judy and I left the world of veterinary medicine for a couple of hours to visit a friend and long time farm client in Cooperstown where she just had triple bypass open heart surgery last week. I told the desk at ICU I was her veterinarian when they asked what my relationship to her was. They smiled and let me pass. They dont know that a veterinarian and farmer are joined at the hip and their troubles are my troubles. How many times have I laid me down to sleep with their animal illnesses on my mind and awoken the next morning refreshed and ready to do battle once more. Our friend is doing well and we brought a smile to her face. My story of working at the reservation in Arizona and almost running the border guard roadblock brought a wide eyed smile to her face. Apologies to Judy for telling it yet another time. I just cant help myself. We left her with a renewed feeling that service to others is what really matters in this crazy often amazingly evil world that also has such capacity for good. And so, its time to get up and start another day. I wonder what the tide will bring in on this day.
