Back when I was a kid, flat tires seemed to be a common phenomenon and we fixed our own. Dad always preferred hot patches. There was a patch clamp to hold the hot patch in place on the tube. The upper side of the patch was a shallow pan that held the ignitable fuel. A corner of it was pulled up and lit with a match. This material spewed and smoked as it made its way over the patch. The heat caused the patch to adhere to the tube. I guess this relates to the old saying, "to smell the patching." CTE
