Back when the Dodgers hired Paul DePodesta as their general - TopicsExpress

Back when the Dodgers hired Paul DePodesta as their general manager the Los Angeles columnists decided that the best and smartest reaction to him would be to make calculator jokes, call him a geek, a stats guru and basically be those stereotypical jackasses in school who liked to shove stereotypical nerds into lockers. That was a long time ago, and most of them have moved on. But today, a day after the Dodgers hired a smart new GM in Farhan Zaidi, L.A. Times columnist Steve Dilbeck goes right back to that well, literally calling him a geek and a nerd, asserting that his advanced degrees from prestigious institutions will make him the right guy to fix my computer and acting openly disdainful of baseball analytics. In any other field, a reporter who chose to mock intelligent, data-driven executives and blatantly ignore how the industry he covers had changed would be fired. In sports journalism, willful ignorance is still widely accepted and even expected.
