Background stories: ♬♩ CTHULHU ♩♫ – I must confess that I was never a big fan of Lovecraft, preferring the more subtle chill conjured by Britains master of the macabre, M.R. James, but the more I read the more he grew on me. When I was looking for a recurring theme for an album the Cthulhu Mythos was an obvious choice, and more so since those who had written songs with a Lovecraftian theme were (mostly) metal bands with all the subtlety of a drunken plumber. If I could retain the poetry of his dreamlike environment and add mellotron to evoke the grandeur of the dark inner worlds which the old gods inhabit, I would hopefully be more faithful to his vision.
