Bactrian camels, Silk Route, Ladakh - TopicsExpress

Bactrian camels, Silk Route, Ladakh ------------------------------------------------ One of the surprises was finding sand dunes in Hunder in Nubra Valley, Ladakh. Even more surprising was finding Bactrian camels there, originally from the steppes in Central Asia. Unusually they are double backed. When trade along the legendary Silk Route was alive, Hunder was an important stopover on the way to Tibet and China. When the Silk Route closed, these camels were released into the wild. Recently, some smart villagers domesticated some camels and now make an easy living giving rides to tourists. It is a must have experience, including that oops moment when the camel suddenly rises and you are almost thrown off ! Anthropologically, just like the belt extending into Gilgit Baltistan, there are small pockets of local ppl with blue eyes and auburn hair. They are believed to be leftovers from the Greek incursions 2000 years ago. https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=10200837182998005&set=a.10200674268365241.1073741827.1416813403&type=1&theater
