Bad day for Serbian tennis! September 18th was a bad day for Serbian tennis, as Bojana Jovanovski, Vesna Dolonc and Janko Tipsarevic all ended their competitions for this week. Janko Tipsarevic was seeded third for the competition, but he stumbled at the first hurdle. Tipsarevic, who gave Serbia the deciding point in the Davis Cup, had no strength to overcome Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain. Tipsarevic, currently ranked as world’s no.23 missed his chance in the opening set, before the Spaniard finished the match of routinely. The 58th player of the world won the opening set in a tie break with 7:5. It was a close and tight first set, before Agut continued his run to close out the match 7:6, 6:3 in 106 minutes. Tipsa announced his good form in the Davis Cup, losing to Raonic in a five set thriller and defeating Pospisil in a three set match. Was he tired or is the bad 2013 going to continue for the Serb? We will have to wait and see. Serbian ladies both won a set in their encounters, but failed to qualify for the quarterfinals in Guangzhou. Bojana Jovanovski was the closest one, as she had a big 3:0 advantage in the deciding set, but fell to America’s Vania King. Jovanovski, who knocked out first seed Sorana Cirstea 6:1, 6:2 yesterday had no strength to dismiss Vania King. It all started really wrong for the Serb, as King won the opener by 6:4. Jovanovski woke up and won the next nine games in a row, to claim the second set by 6:0 and open the decider with 3:0. Little American had no intention of giving up, as she broke Jovanovski twice more and held her own service games to pull through 6:4, 0:6, 6:4 in 2 hours and 7 minutes. However, Jovanovski showed some positive signs in the last couple of days, as she won a WTA tournament in Tashkent and she defeated the no.1 seed, Cirstea, here in Guangzhou. The bad day for the Serbs continued, as Vesna Dolonc fell in the last 16 of the same tournament, after she lost to Yvonne Meusburger of Austria. Dolonc was the one in the commanding position after 39 minutes of play, as she dominated through the first set by 6:2. The 29-years old Austrian fought back with the same score in the second one by 6:2. The 65th player of the world began the third set with a 3:1 lead, before Dolonc broke back to level the score. In the end, Meusburger was the one who set up a clash with the second seeded Alize Cornet, after almost two hours on the court. 2:6, 6:2, 6:4 was the final score, as Serbia was left with no more representatives in China, after Jaksic lost yesterday and Jovanovski fell today to Vania King. No one lost, but this day proved to be a bad one for Serbia, when it comes to tennis, since they will play against Switzerland next year in the Davis Cup. The draw decided that these two countries will face off for the place in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup. Currently, Switzerland has two players in the Top 10, Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka. However, FedEx wasn’t playing this year at the Davis Cup, so it’s unknown if he will help his country. Serbia had luck with their quarterfinal opponents, as it will be the winner of Belgium and Kazakhstan. However, the Serbs are probably more focused on their Davis Cup Grand Finale against Czech Republic in the middle of November this year.
