(see details below) Banda Aceh the city of one million coffee shops. Coffee shops have always played a strong role in its culture and history. They are places to discuss ideas, share stories and engage in conversations. Post-tsunami, coffee shops have undergone substantial transformation in their role as urban spaces, they acted as a node for information gathering and network building. International emergency services, NGOs and journalists needed WiFi, which the coffee shops soon provided. The resulting presence of western women in coffee shops led to local Acehnese women and children being accepted into these traditionally male-dominated spaces.¹ thekupicultureproject While the Coffee Shop has become a key and iconic place for social interaction for the youth of Aceh, investigation surrounding further creative engagement within their city will form the framework for this Studio. The Studio will interrogate general theories on social spaces before focusing in on the context of the Acehnese social space dynamic. Complimenting this will be tangible / ephemeral and performative investigations of the Coffee Shop through diagram, photography and film. FIELD studies, incorporating direct interaction with the locals, particularly the Acehnese youth is also encouraged to substantiate the how, why, who, where and what these spaces bring to the community and what can be learnt from these unique spaces. Students will then draw upon this data to develop their own questions to substantiate where opportunities exist to engage the creativity of the youth - hence forming their own brief, and subsequently a speculative design. The design propositions will have a strong focus on urban intervention and/or event, thinking in around and layering on the Coffee Shop.
