Bangalore to get ‘fire & safety’ centre for petroleum sector - zackariyah.t.c Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) plans to set up its third centre with the focus on ‘fire and safety’ in petroleum sector in Bangalore. “For the proposed institute, the Karnataka Government has come forward to give 200 acres near Bangalore. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas will invest around Rs 350 crore,” Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M. Justifying the selection of Bangalore for RGIPT centre, Moily said, “Global energy companies have set up their IT and research base in the city and we felt it appropriate to be amongst them.” “Also, proximity to an international airport makes it easier for global experts to frequent the institute,” he added. “For faculty and technical assistance, RGIPT has already partnered with Texas A&M University,” said D.M. Reddy, president, RGIPT. GREEN CORRIDOR Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “The State has agreed to go for clean energy – CNG-based projects – along the National Highway 4 (connecting Mumbai-Bangalore) and declare it a ‘Green Corridor’. “The State has also given commitment to the Petroleum Ministry to shift energy usage in power generation, transportation and for piped gas to residential homes in phases,” he added. The gas usage for power generation in the State is for the 450 MW Yelahanka plant and the newly constructed 700 MW Bidadi power plants. In transportation, the State has agreed to give land for GAIL to set up gas station at strategic locations. Initially, 25 stations will be operational in 3 to 6 months and by the end of first year, there will be 65 stations. “The State government is planning to buy new buses under JNNURM scheme and gradually introduce new CNG buses in a phased manner,” Siddaramaiah said. “For residential homes, since we have completed 50 km pipeline, piped gas for domestic use will be introduced in Bangalore city in phases,” said B.C. Tripathi CMD, GAIL (India). GAS MANAGEMENT CENTRE GAIL announced the setting up of regional gas management centre in Bangalore. Tripathi said, “We plan to invest close to Rs 80 crore for setting up the centre at Bangalore. When operational in six months time will take handle the southern grid and will be connected to the centre at Delhi.” Moily said the survey is complete for linking Chitradurga-Mangalore branch line of the Dabhol-Bangalore gas pipeline project. GAIL has come forward to take up work on a 350-km pipeline project with a budget of Rs 1,400 crore shortly. The company has also been given permission for linking Chitradurga-Bellary.
