Bangladesh Girl Summit The ‘Bangladesh Girl Summit 2014’ has been scheduled to be held on 27 October 2014 in the National Osmani Memorial Auditorium, Dhaka with an aim to end child marriage and to enhance girls’ empowerment in the country. With the theme of ‘ending child marriage and empowering girls’, Bangladesh Girl summit will trigger national and international support to inspire efforts to end child marriage by bringing together young people, community members, activists, government, media and international leaders, experts and champions committed to the empowerment of women and girls. The summit has two specific objectives: Accelerate the efforts in ending child marriage Build momentum and disseminate the goal and target set by the government to address child marriage to inspire and secure a better future for girls Child marriage as key focus in Bangladesh Girl Summit 2014 The event will recognise child marriage as one of the major causes of violence against women and girls, and will foster empowerment. It calls for efforts that address this problem with the highest priority and faster initiatives. On October 27 2014, the first ever Girl Summit in Bangladesh as well as in Asia is going to be held with the aim to spur national and international efforts in ending child marriage. The summit will be hosted by BRAC in partnership with the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MoWCA) of Bangladesh Government and in cooperation with the Department for International Development (DFID). The summit in solidarity with government’s commitment will engage mass people including diverse groups: youth, women and children rights based organisations, INGOs, donor community and NGOs including those that particularly work for the youth. The summit will also share stories of girls and women who had been child brides and will disseminate practices in tackling the issue. It will hear from many inspiring individuals from affected communities who are now driving in changes so that women and girls can enjoy greater opportunities in the future. The renowned persons and institutions will pledge for an end to child marriage and will strive to strengthen efforts through partnerships. The summit will organise a fair to motivate and entertain participants. The Bangladesh Girl Summit 2014 will be an effective platform that is committed to a positive change for women and girls in the country.
