Bank customers ’ll now transact business with fingerprints – - TopicsExpress

Bank customers ’ll now transact business with fingerprints – Sanusi I had written an article on the good of the National ID and I do hope in fact that the commission brings it to fruition by December this year as it promised. In the light of that, the question remains why another biometric from the CBN? We have spent billions on seemingly different projects whereas they are all related. Lack of good ideas impoverish the nation, not lack of petroleum or gold. Personally I think Sanusi is a great brain even though he is arrogant and prideful, but I wonder if the so-called Nigerian syndrome (in this case our inability to form a synergy and use a policy across board) is not affecting this whole biometrics discourse. In as much as it is very important, infact necessary, the truth remains we cannot have different biometrics for different purposes. It is not only wasteful but also an indication of eventual failure. Let us get our acts together! Make one biometrics work across the nation: for National ID, bank transactions, Sim registrations, Health Insurance and several other logistical needs of the country. I bank on the intelligence of the likes of Sanusi and beg him to put to use our trust in them! However, one may wonder if Nigeria is really ready for a such high level Banking tech when very basic infrastructure like Power is still a mirage. Even America that is advanced in all ramification does not use the proposed level of biometrics for general banking operations. Does any body know where in the world this model has been tested and proven? The disadvantage of this is that i can not give my son or any trusted person my credit/debit card and ask him to go get some money if i can not go. I also wonder who bears the cost of this mass identification, and who controls the central data base the CBN or the Banks? I honestly dont think Biometric and personal identification is a project for CBN but for the Ministry of Internal Affairs on which the Banking Industry can leverage upon when necessary. Biometric identification goes beyond Banking alone and CBN should allow the Banks to come up with their various mechanisms for fraud prevention/detection while CBN concentrate effort at encouraging/ promoting cashless society, curbing inflation, banks solvency, Government fiscal polices etc.....
