Banned Books Week: More of Orwell’s Words Newspeak - A fictional, controlled language created by a totalitarian state to limit free thought and an concepts that pose a threat. Forbidden words/concepts include freedom, self-expression, individuality, and peace. Any form of thought alternative to the Party’s construct is classified as a thoughtcrime. A good example of Newspeak is the Patriot Act, which is designed to control behavior/thought. The implication is that if you oppose the act (much less violate it), you can’t be a patriot. Doublethink – The act of simultaneously accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct. Related to hypocrisy and neutrality. Somewhat related to cognitive dissonance, where contradictory beliefs cause conflict in an individual’s mind. Doublethink, however, is notable due to a lack of cognitive dissonance. A person is completely unaware of any conflict or contradiction.
