Banner SPORTS KLEM Local Schedule (week of July 14) SATURDAY RESULTS - July 19 (high school baseball) CLASS 1A DISTRICT FINALS (LE MARS) -- No. 5 Gehlen Catholic rallied from a 6-1 deficit to win 7-6 in a seventh inning walk-off against No. 4 Remsen St. Marys Saturday night in the 1A District finals at Gehlens Riverview Complex. Solomon Frekings one-out single to left scored Austin Herbst from second base with the winner to cap an incredible rally by the Jays as they avenged two regular season losses to the Hawks. Andrew Pottebaums two-run double in the first inning gave St. Marys a 2-0 head start. Brady Heyings sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first made it 2-1. Starting pitchers Matt Wesselmann for St. Marys and Blake Wiltgen for Gehlen got locked in after that, matching zeros for the next three innings. A pair of one out walks to the number eight and nine batters in the Hawks line-up opened the door to a four-run fifth inning by St. Marys. Erik Willman squeezed a run across with a second runner scoring when the throw to first base on the bunt attempt went down the right field line. Elliott Conover and Andrew Pottebaum followed with RBI hits for a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. Gehlen proceeded to score six runs on eight hits in their final three at-bats. Three runs scored in the fifth on RBI hits by Brady Heying, Blake Wiltgen and Mitchell Flack to trim the deficit to 6-4. The Jays tied it in the sixth on a RBI ground out by Heying and a RBI double by Jarod Steffes. The late game rally by the Jays was fueled by a pair of double plays to end both the sixth and seventh innings defensively. Brady Heying (8-0) got the win in relief while Elliott Conover (6-3) took the loss. Heying drove in three runs for the Jays and Lucas Hunt had three hits and scored three runs. Andrew Pottebaum had three RBIs for Remsen St. Marys. The Hawks close out a 28-and-5 season while Gehlen Catholic improves to 28-and-3 and will meet Woodbury Central in the Sub-State finals Tuesday night at the Le Mars Community Bulldog Complex at 7 p.m. The game will be carried on KLEM. Gehlen handed the Wildcats an 11-0 setback in June at the J-Club Tournament.
