Banning mass-market apps won’t stop terrorists from communicating in secret. Even an amateur coder like me could write and install an encryption app on a pc, Android device or jailbroken iPhone. So this isn’t really about stopping secretive people from communicating. It’s about monitoring *everyone* – continuing the trend that Edward Snowden exposed, and plugging the gaps. It’s about accessing masses of data from people who use the mass-market apps. It’s about profiling YOU. It’s about learning how to present ideas in ways that will convince you to agree with things you wouldn’t normally agree with. It’s about maintaining state power in an age of fragmented individualism. People trying to communicate secretly - such as terrorists - will be the only ones not affected. That’s obvious when you think about it.
