Bantal Kekabu (Kapok filled Pillows) I love pillows filled with kekabu (known as kapok in english). I came to love them since my birth, if I may say so. They are so soft and comfortable and so huggable. They make my dreams at night much more fullfilling, hehehhehehheh. Kekabu as it is know in Bahasa Melayu are from the seeds of the Pokok Kekabu (Kapok Tree in English). These seeds when they are ripe were either plucked or if fallen to the earth would be picked up to be processed. The fillings or kekabu will be separated from small black like peas (seeds) that are abounded within these pods of kekabu. Once it has being dried up a suitable pillow case will be filled up with these kekabu. My Allahyarhamah Grandmother used to make her own pillows as these. I was the one who would plucking or gathering all the kekabu pods for her. Later I would be in charged of making sure these kekabu were dried in the sun. Once grandma has filled the pillows with these kekabu fillings it was my job to dry these ready made pillows again, to ensure they were perfectly dried and to insure no insect or mites still stayed in the pillows. Bantal kekabu need to be aired oftenly in the hot sun, such it is normal to see rows of these pillows being placed on make shift stilts, balconies and windows of kampung houses. Pillows that are vibrant in colors and sizes. A well taken care bantal kekabu can last a lifetime. These pillows are in great demand now days for weddings and for daily used. It costs between RM35.00 to RM50.00 per ready made bantal kekabu. Not only as pillows but as bolsters, cushions, and mattresses. I still have a my single size kekabu mattress used during my berkhatan ceremony. And still in safe keeping is two 3 by 3 cushion (Chior) used during my Akah Nikah ages ago together with its covering Tekat Emas (dont know the English term). It is said that a good night sleep depends on the pillow or pillows you sleep on. I can attest that using my bantal kekabu and my feathered pillow has made my sleep so much enjoyable. A good pillow will also ensure that you will not wake up with a stiff neck. To those who are getting married, for the first or second or third or maybe fourth, please do consider having bantal kekabu as a must on your wedding bed. I am sure you know the advantages of having them and you will not regret it.I got my bantal kekabu from a shop in Kuala Kangsar who also will cater to any requests for any types or sizes that I want. Its sad to say this but the pokok kekabu is now practically difficult to be found in kampungs and the rural areas. Lastly. its high time somebody, somewhere do something about this.
