Barbell Rows An excellent move for the back. Depending on the grip it can help build width and or thickness. Wider grip; wider back. Narrow grip; thicker back. You should focus on pulling your elbows back and envision your back folding in half. This activates all of the back muscles. You shouldnt totally have to yank the weight up and if you cannot feel your back tighten at the top of the movement lighten the load. Its not about the weight but more or less about feeling the muscles your are training actually work.
