Barbers and Haircuts in Dover. Well, at my age haircuts and barbers havent been a major part of my life for a long, long time. A $20 pair of Wahl clippers from one of the internet wonders seems to have solved most of my problems on the sides.. The top... well, lets say the top has taken care of itself and become maintenance free! These cheap clippers have done so much to decrease the number of barbers around town. At one time there was a barber on almost every street. When you found a barber you liked, you showed allegiance to that same guy for years. none of this bouncing around to whoever had a special going that week. In Dover it seemed they were mostly Greek. My family men were long time regulars at Charlies Barber Shop ( Charlie Frangos) on Third St just down from the fire station ( across from the Uptown). Charlies partner ( and brother in law) Nick had a huge disagreement.... arguing over who should have first chair. This argument caused a split and Nick Karabelas left Charlies and opened his own shop. My family evidently paid homage by staying with Charlie but I assume a substantial group made the move over to Nicks new place. If memory serves me, Charlie had 3 stations. The first two were the classic barber chairs... a great collectable for modern playrooms and Man Caves. It was the last chair that was so unique. It was a little car.. controlled up and down like a regular chair but looking more like a 10 cent ride in the lobby of Siegels or Sawyers. I got my first clips in that car...and I gradually moved to the mans chair although that step was accompanied for several years with a bench seat which was put across the arms of the main chair to lift our small bodies up to cutting height. You knew you were grown up when you finally got to use the regular chair with no addons. You knew you were really grown up when Charlie would put the hot lather on the back of your neck, strop the straight razor and man shave the back of your neck... Then, of course the aftershave/ cologne splash! I dont remember what a haircut cost back in the late 50s.. maybe someone can help me out. For some reason a quarter stands in mind but dont quote me. Grow up in Dover in the 50s and 60s??? Where did you get your hair cut? Thanks to Paula Demopoulos Panasis for help with a few details on this post...
