Barbershop Bechay After a refreshing resting day at home yesterday, today I felt today is the day. So it was. I went to a slum neighbourhood next to my home I’m living in Kurla. I knew the area could chocked me with the variety of poverty so I was kinda prepared for the unexpected but we are never actually prepared. Its around 10am and the roads are not yet busy. Kids are playing on the streets throwing a dirty teddybear to each other. Another kid looks at me like I was on the wrong place at the wrong time. At the end of road there is a barbershop and inside the shop, there is a thin wrinkled man, smoking a cigaret while he is shaving a client. His name is Bechay and has 55 years. Since his 5 years old that works on this barbershop, at that time his father business. Today his father has 90 years old and Bechay is the only one working there. This barbershop is his home and was mine for a couple of hours. On the ground floor there are two barber chairs but only one is used. And a bench for costumers, like me, wait their turn. On the first floor is where he cooks his meals based on eggs, green vegetables, and rice. He sleeps on the floor because “its to hot upstairs. I prefer here, the floor is more fresh”. I could imagine him sleeping in between the two chairs and the waiting bench for a week or two but not has a way of living. This helped me to understand how much he treasure this place and kindly says the clients to use gently the chairs. Bechay is married and has three kids, two boys and one girl. His wife lives 185km from him in another village called Vitar Predesh. His here alone but sill, Bechay, smiles a lot, his patient and offered me tea with milk. He first trimmed my beard making my moustache look twice bigger “a respectable man has a good moustache.” he says. Bechay is firm with his blade. In any second I thought about his talent. Payed 100 rupees for my new hair cut and beard and in the end we took a photo to celebrate this epic moment.
