Barry Keith Burton, 1949 - June 3, 2010, Class of 1967 (thank you Doug Tracy) Barry Keith Burton, 61, retired FedEx manager died peacefully on June 3, 2010 surrounded by his family. Barry is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Betty Elam Burton, daughters Deanna Lynn Jarrell of Louisville, KY and Hailey Nicole Burton of Memphis, son-in-law Larry Jarrell; grandchildren Connor, Kraig and Krista Jarrell. Barry also leaves his father, James Keith Burton; sister Kay Ann DeCaro of Cordova, niece Paige DeCaro of Atlanta, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mark and Mary Beth Elam, nephew Shad, father-in-law James E. Elam, and an uncle Les Burton and many cousins and loving friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Eva Youngblood Burton and sister, Jamie Kay Burton. Barry was a 1967 graduate of Walnut Ridge High School in Columbus, Ohio. He attended Ohio State University, Murray State, and Memphis State University, majoring in Business Administration. While attending Memphis State he met Betty and they were married July 2, 1983. Barry was a great story teller and loved to tell of his travels as a child with his Navy family. Barry never met a stranger and made many friends throughout his lifetime. He will be greatly missed by them all. He was a dedicated employee of FedEx, where he retired as a manager in 2003, after two decades of loyal service. He started out as a handler at the Memphis World Hub in 1984. Within a few years, he worked his way up to a manager. Over the course of his career, Barry managed thousands of employees and was loved and respected by all. He had a knack for helping people reach their potential and achieve goals they never thought possible. He was a people person in every sense of the word. He based his career and life on helping others. The family would like to thank all the wonderful people at UT Cancer Institute and Methodist University Hospital. Many thanks from the family for the three wonderful doctors that helped Barry through his long battle with lung cancer, Dr. Ronald Lawson of UT Cancer Institute, Dr. George S. Flinn, Jr., M.D. and acupuncturist Orlando Ly. Visitation will be from 4 p.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, at Canale Funeral Directors, 2700 Union Extended, with a memorial service to follow at 6 p.m. in the chapel.
