Based on some recent questions, the following tips are for new members who are interested in coming along on NUCC trips, and covers a few things which are important for ensuring that your trip is as enjoyable as possible. Thermal Underwear Full length thermal underwear is essential equipment for caving - sometimes it is cold and/ or wet in caves (as well as outside) . You should be able to get thermal top and bottoms cheaply from a shop like Target (or similar) in Civic, and sometimes Kathmandu (also in Civic) has sales where thermals are not too expensive. Shoes In the wet muddy caves, shoes are important. Do not wear standard street shoes with no grip. You will need shoes with some grip such as runners, volleys, light weight walking boots or even gumboots. Thick, preferably wool, socks are also good for keeping wet feet warm. Weekend Equipment For some weekend trips we are able to stay in huts and do not need to camp. If we are camping, the club and club members have some spare tents, so we can usually find sufficient tent space for all participants. New members do not need to go out and buy a tent (unless they want to). Some members of the club have sleeping bag and mats and may be able to loan them to new members if you ask. Numbers of potential loans are, however, limited and dependent on participants and we may not have enough for some trips. New members can typically find a very cheap sleeping bag and mat from Anaconda, BCF, Camping World or Rays Outdoors (although some of these may be hard to get to for students with no transport - I think the Camping World in Mitchell is on the Civic to Gungahlin Bus route). Mountain Designs on Lonsdale St in Braddon (just north of Civic and walking distance from ANU) may also have reasonably priced basic sleeping bags.
