Basements fires are a rare events in most jurisdictions. How often do you or and your crews discuss or pre-plan for attacking basement fires? In this video, we see the impact of a flowpath created while the front door is opened allowing an outlet to form. Then as the fire growth increases from the newly created flow path, the smoke and heat increase throughout the first floor as the firefighters vent the windows above the fire. We must consider changing our tactics with regards to basement jobs, textbook tacics may not be the safest ways to attack these fires as we subject our crews to areas. Consider piercing nozzles or cellar nozzzles and train with them in your next training fire to see how effective the are. Be on the lookout for rapid vertical fire progress when the fire and outlet are different levels of structure fires.
