Basic Oxides *. Basic oxides, also known as basic anhydrides, are formed from metallic elements. They are electropositive, which means they tend to release electrons to form a chemical bond with another element. Although most basic oxides are insoluble in water, those that do dissolve in water form basic hydroxides called alkalis. They do not react to bases, but in reaction with acids they form water and salts. Some examples of basic oxides are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide and sodium oxide, which forms sodium hydroxide, or caustic soda, when dissolved in water.
