Basically, this semester sucks. There isnt any gentler way to put it, but heres what Ill do different next semester (consider it a new semesters resolution): 1) Im NOT getting my wisdom teeth pulled the day before my first classes, for obvious reasons. 2) Im done preaching about environmental issues. I cant spend so much time talking and HOPING that people will initiate change because of things I say, or words I write, thats not enough. Ive grown to view the environmental movement as something little different from extremest religion. All of these passionate people telling everyone that we have to move away from fossil fuels (while driving cars and flying across the country) that we have to consume fewer resources (while owning more shoes than there are days of the week). Theres too much hypocrisy. This doesnt satisfy me, and Im getting dangerously depressed TRYING to find satisfaction in this. I DO NOT BELIEVE that we can make change by making a ruckus (whether causing a ruckus through film, writing, talking, painting, protest or poetry-- art MIGHT inspire people to create change, but if we hope to create change through inspiring others, when we ourselves arent creating change in our own lives, I see no hope for the future of this movement.) Im done trying to convert people to environmentalism. This isnt working. 3) Im not going to let anything take me away from my real jobs, the jobs I live for, where I create change and see the results of that change every day that I am teaching, story telling, and rowing my boats. 4) Im not going to let anything take me away from the canyon (without that place I tend to lose myself)
