Bat Ray feeding on the reef while reef fish, including Sheephead, - TopicsExpress

Bat Ray feeding on the reef while reef fish, including Sheephead, Senoritas, Kelp Bass, Garibaldi and Rock wrasse, try to get some “leftovers”. Bat ray (Myliobatis californica) feed on small fish, crustaceans, molluscs and worms. Their teeth are fused into plates which they use to crush their prey, spit out the shells and then eat the soft, fleshy parts. Bat rays can have a wingspan up to 6 ft, this one was ~ 4 ft. They do have venomous spines at the base of their long, whip-like tail but are generally docile and sting only to defend themselves. I couldnt tell what the Bat ray had been eating but there were urchins and parchment worms on the reef in that spot.
