Batangas I Master “Tuwid” Mesa Altar Inscribed with the date - TopicsExpress

Batangas I Master “Tuwid” Mesa Altar Inscribed with the date 1801 Probably made in Taal Tindalo wood Provenance: Paulino and Hetty Que Collection. In later years, the Batangas I Master produced a series of tables not unlike the UNO but distinctily unique nonetheless. These tables retain the rococo asymmetrical fenestrated [cut-out] wood carvings found on the UNO but now these tables have straight, tapering legs called “Tuwid”. Villegas, in his article “Classical Furniture in the Paulino Que Collection” (Arts of Asia, 1991, p. 72) posits that the later pieces made simulating the look of Batangas Unos were probably the work of an atelier founded by a son or apprentice of the first Batangas I Master.
