Batten down the hatches !!! This is from Civil defence and Emergency Management. A stormy period of strong winds and possible heavy rain will affect Auckland overnight Tuesday and Wednesday. We can expect: 1. MetService has issued a severe watch for wind and rain in Auckland. 2. Gale force northeast and easterly winds will build throughout Tuesday. 3. By midday Tuesday, mean eastnortheast winds are expected to be 65 km/hr with gusts to 85km/hr. 4. By midnight Tuesday, mean eastnortheast winds of 85 km/hr, gusting 100 km/hr are expected in exposed northeastern areas and the Gulf Islands. 5. These winds are expected peak in the early hours of Wednesday and slightly ease in the morning. Winds will build again on Wednesday afternoon with gusts to 100km/hr in exposed places. 6. Overnight Tuesday, up to 50mm of rain is possible north of Orewa and for Great Barrier Island. Totals are expected to be less elsewhere. 7. High tides are very low (2.9 and 3.0m east coast) over the period however, sustained winds are likely to develop waves which may splash low lying roads and reserves around the Gulf. This is expected to be a prolonged wind event with gale force winds (65 km/hr) affecting northeastern parts of Auckland and the Gulf Islands in the 60 hours from 6am Tuesday to 6pm Thursday. Sustained winds and associated gusts of this strength may cause localised power outages, downed trees and move debris around. Ground conditions are very saturated across Auckland with over 150% of normal rainfall in June. Localised slips and coastal cliff failure may occur if rainfall does become heavy. We will monitor forecasts and provide additional updates if required. Regards Richard Richard Woods | Manager Planning & Intelligence, Civil Defence and Emergency Management
