Baycats keep second place hopes alive, hand Royals 30th loss The Barrie Baycats broke open a tight game by scoring seven runs in the seventh inning on their way to a 19-9 thumping of the Guelph Royals in the lone game played in the Intercounty Baseball League on Saturday night. Matt Proctor had two hits, including a grand slam homer in the big seventh, and drove in five runs as the Baycats pounded Guelph pitching for 18 hits to win the high scoring game, which was tied 7-7 after just two innings of play. Barrie (25-16) moved into a tie for second place with the London Majors with their fourth straight win. The Baycats will end their regular season in Brantford against the pennant-winning Red Sox Tuesday night. Guelph (9-30) lost its fourth straight game and for the 30th time this season. The Royals finish up with a doubleheader at home against Toronto on Monday and with a road game Tuesday in London before meeting the Brantford Red Sox in the opening round of the playoffs. Ryan Spataro had a big night for the Baycats with four hits, four runs scored and an RBI, while Kyle DeGrace added three hits, four runs scored and drove in two more for the winners. Jason Coker added three hits, three RBI and two runs scored and Jeff Cowan had two hits, three RBI and scored a run. Brendan Keys added a pair of hits, a run scored and an RBI while Kevin Atkinson also drove in two runs for the Baycats, who took advantage of seven Guelph errors. Garrett Ferguson added a pair of hits and scored twice as well. Starter Brad Bissell survived the tough first two innings and got the win, going five innings. He allowed seven runs on six hits with six strikeouts and five walks, before three relievers finished up. Guelph starter Roberto Suppa lasted just three innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with six walks. Reliever Luca Borges faced just one batter in the fourth who reached on an error, but he was charged with the winning run and took the loss. Josh Garton also had a grand slam homer for the Royals, winding up with two hits, two runs scored and five RBI, while Dan Treccia also homered, had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Taylor Castrillo had two hits and scored three runs for the Royals, who managed 10 hits. Please note the remaining games in the Intercounty Baseball League’s regular season listed below. There are 10 games left to be played and still two games to be scheduled before the playoffs begin next week. Brantford has finished first, Toronto will finish fifth and Guelph will finish last in eighth place. First round playoff series are all best-of-sevens, with only Brantford vs. Guelph determined as a first round match-up.
