Bays u21 salvaged a point as they clawed back from a shocking first half performance in a 2-2 draw at Gorge. The match was delayed 20 minutes due to a lack of a ref, and began with a ref from the crowd. The ref finally showed up 40 minutes after scheduled kick off. The match was played in blistering heat, in surely one of the hottest october days Victoria has seen in some time. This made waiting the delayed kick off even more frustrating for all parties. When the match finally begun, Bays started well. They utilized the wings well, with the wingers constantly getting behind the opposing fullbacks. It only took 15 minutes for the breakthrough to come, Alex Hatherill switched the ball wide to Calvin Litton, who had a deft flick which somehow made its way to Nicky Hurley, and the diminutive striker finished with aplomb. The young striker took his chance exceptionally well, volleying into the bottom right keeper, notching his first of the season. After the goal, Bays took their foot off the pedal, and let Gorge get back in to the game. The midfield and defence made countless mistakes as they were cut apart by the opposing team, it was only a matter of time before they equalized. The home side hit a low cross from the touchline, which trickled its way through the box avoiding everyone. When someone finally decided to take initiative and clear the ball, it went horribly wrong as Simon Avila unfortunately sliced the ball into his own net. Instead of being woken up by the goal, the entire side seemed to collapse. Not long after the home side scored again, with a venomous shot dipping over the helpless James Saville. The team had the hairdryer treatment at half time, and understandably so. Fortunately, Bays stepped up in the second half. Justin Bonnieux seemed to be at the heart of every move, as his quick feet and clever movement constantly exposed the opponents. In a tantalizing move, Jiho Chun found Justin with a lovely lofted through pass. The centre mid-come-winger had lots to do, but he brought the ball down on his chest skillfully and made his move toward goal. He attempted to have a shot, but was put off balance by the opposing defender, and the ref pointed right to the spot. The call may have been controversial, but their was no doubt that he earned the penalty. Up stepped the inform Miguel Bustamante, who confidently slotted the ball down the middle, notching his 3rd goal in as many games. The Bays team tried to get the lead but seemed to run out of ideas and energy as the heat was belting down. The match sputtered out to a 2-2 draw, with both teams frustrated with the result. The team is looking to learn from this game, as a good match needs 90 minutes of hard work and focus, rather than 45. They will play Nanaimo next weekend in a rare thanksgiving fixture.
