One day, they went together to the bazaar of cobblers. That man had a black slave who was following his master. The slave was busy looking at the shops and strayed from his master. The friend of Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS) was continuously looking at his back and he did not find the slave. He got very annoyed and enraged. Suddenly he saw the slave and said, "your mother is a so and so, where were you?" As soon as he uttered these abusive sentences, Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS) raised his hand with surprise and struck it hard upon his forehead and said, "you abuse his mother?" I thought you were a pious man and I was a friend of yours for a long time and I talked about you in the assembly of friends and companions. It is good that I came to know that you are not a good friend. Hurry, get away from me." Today as we commemorate the day of shahahat of our great Imam (a.s) who was renowned for his knowledge and great status as a scholar, let us remember that he was especially known for his AKLHLAQ (good manners and conduct). No matter how educated one is and how "modern" and "civilized" one claims to be, what sets him above others and elevates him is his behavior towards others. Whether it is in person or on email, during interfaith dialogues or on social networks such as Facebook Twitter etc let us choose our words carefully, let us never use abusive language, let us not attack with character assassination or judgmental snide remarks and personal hurtful comments. They say "a man is known by the company he keeps" Let us remember that a follower is especially known for the religion and Imam he follows.
