Be inspired - He is one of the most famous actors of our time, but he hasnt always been a household name. Just like his character in the movie he became a superstar only after working his way up from the bottom. This is a man whos truly beaten the odds. His problems literally started at birth. An accident by the doctors during the labor process severed a nerve and left the left side of his face paralyzed. The paralysis left him with not only an odd appearance, but also slurred speech-- the latter of which nearly doomed his dream of becoming an actor. He moved to NYC to start his career in acting, but no one would hire him. He was evicted from his apartment and left so broke that he was forced to sleep at the NYC Port Authority bus station for three weeks. He knew hed hit rock bottom when he was forced to sell his dog, his best friend, for $25 to a stranger just so he could feed himself. Then one day, while watching Muhammad Ali in a boxing match, he got the idea for a screenplay. He stayed up day and night, eventually writing a script in just three days. He pitched the idea to some producers who offered to buy it for $125,000... but they wouldnt allow him to act in the movie. Despite the fact that he was flat-broke, he turned down the offer. His dream was to be an actor, and he wouldnt settle for anything less. A few weeks later, the same producers offered him $200,000 more than they did originally, but he still turned them down. Eventually, the producers allowed him to act in the movie... but only paid him $35,000. He immediately used thousands of dollars from his earnings to track down and buy back his dog. The film ended up making $200 million and made him, a man who was once so broke he had to sell his own dog, one of the most prolific actors in the industry.
