Be not confused by the recent pilot project from the Toronto - TopicsExpress

Be not confused by the recent pilot project from the Toronto police to give out "positive tickets". It is firstly another concrete example that police and government DO responde to activism. However, it is also an obvious tactic to quell the activism that has demanded AND won the right for receipts for cards. Although the Justice IS NOT Colour-Blind Campaign has been and continues to be opposed to carding we recognize how activism has necessitated this response from the Toronto police. However, this response also speaks to the futility of receipts. All the police want are reasons to approach people - they do not care why they approach you. This response is an extra-judicial circumventing of receipts. They have now created a mechanism by which they can approach people without having justification. They see you do some ambiguous "good deed" and can now approach you to "reward". Your reward? A coupon and long conversation/investigation about who you are, why you "did your good deed", who your "associates" are, and where you are going and coming from. We must oppose this veiled tactic just as vigorously as we do all forms of racial profiling and take the stand that police have NO right to stop and speak to us when no crime has been committed.
