Beautiful East Vancouver moment of my day: I am driving from my baritone saxophone lesson to meet my choir brothers for a coffee. On the way there I see an older man, I know him to see him from years of living in the neighbourhood together. If I ever knew his name I have forgotten it. He is working in the communal flower gardens planted in the middle of the intersections roundabout thing. Appears to be pulling weeds and picking up garbage. I see him around often, at the market, with his granddaughter, building a fence, stuff like that. Always personable and kind. Today I see him beautifying our public space. I roll down my window. He waves hello. You are a good man. I tell him. He smiles, aw shucks kind of, then meets my eyes. So are you. He says, without hesitating. Then he stops, reconsiders, I think hoping he hasnt offended me somehow. He stammers a little, Uh, you know what I mean. I smile my widest smile at him, give him the thumbs up. He grins, relieved. I wave and drive away. In my rear-view mirror, I see him see me looking back. He salutes, and then curtseys a little, his fan rake at his side. We both feel good, I can tell.
