Beautiful ... a father figure coach, hard work, consistency, rhythm, high expectations, proximity of role models,a tradition of excellence that youre part of. A number of these hubs for top talent in sport and performance art share similar features it seems. Reminded me somewhat of what Ive read about Woodens approach to basketball coaching. Focus on the fundamentals ..apparently his first lesson was always the same - how to tie shoe laces .... carefully :) Theres a serenity, simpleness in these great coaches approach to practice. Focus on the fundamentals and pound in the basics session after session. And design deliberate practice to conquering weaknesses... one at a time, until you dont have any. On an aside .... Talent is Overrated is a great book to read if you liked this piece and ponder as much as I do, what makes someone an elite performer or what the secret sauce of great coaching is.
