Beautiful new American Soapstone now available at The Stone Collection! Read the story behind the stone below: Churchill Blacksoapstone is now called Virginia Black. The name Churchill Black pays tribute to the place where the soapstone is harvested, a hill in Virginia USA, where a little church is tucked away, hidden from time, but with enduring beauty. Its general coloration is the darkest of any soapstone-we call it black soapstone. Most veining tends to be dark, although white quartzite or calcite veining can be present. Churchill Black soapstone is broadly described as a massive foliated metamorphic rock closely related to slate and serpentine in character. The Churchill Black architectural soapstone is a homogeneous, dense, non-stratified stone comprised largely of talc, magnetite, and chlorite. Due to its low talc content, Church Hill soapstone is the hardest North American soapstone available on the market. This stone is non-porous and resistant to acid naturally, and is typically waxed or oiled to bring out the rich black color. This stone is easily maintained by the homeowner.
