Beautiful story remembering and honoring black South Africans who served in the First World War and were never recognized for it. Years ago we moved into a predominantly colored area, and in our neighbors living room was a photo of their grandfather in Navy uniform. He was a ships cook on destroyers in WWII. Up till that time I had simply no idea, there was never any mention in the history books or even the first-person narratives of the wars that I had read. Deneys Reitz in his Anglo-Boer War diary was about the only one who deigned to mention the debt owed to the Native Agterryers.
