Because of Aquino’s desperate lack of executive experience, he can only appoint people who are friends of his —and when they do wrong, he has no choice but to defend them, simply because he thinks he has to stand by his friends, no matter what.As for the poor, overworked spin doctors of Malacañang, they are forced to turn black into white, finding the moral mendicancy to say that Purisima (or Florencio Abad, Corazon “Dinky” Soliman or whoever has run afoul of both the law or the public) was actually showing candor —when he was in fact caught lying about his official statement of assets and liabilities.Now, lying about your SALN, as I recall, was the excuse used by the Senate to convict and remove a sitting chief justice of the Supreme Court. And not filing a SALN at all for several years was the reason why, I’m told, that a former palace favorite— Grace Padaca of the Commission on Elections— was quietly not reappointed, because of the scandal that she would purportedly cause for the Aquino administration.
