Because the corporate model is the one our laity live in most of the time, it is natural for them to expect their pastor to be a "CEO." Criteria for evaluation and expectations for success are based more on General Electric than the Bible. A best-selling book once tried to give Jesus that label. But in reality, he reversed that image (which was held by religious leaders in his day) by saying and modeling that the greatest among us is the one who serves--the one who refuses to "lord it over" anyone--the one who resists imposing his/will and calling it the will of God (which is always discerned or confirmed in community). The fresh Wind of the Spirit is purging the Body of this toxic atmosphere, and replacing it with a renewal of "life together."
