Been a busy week. Two Juilliard concerts – first night, Ensemble ACJW with pieces by Ravel and Messiaen; another night, ChamberFest with pieces by Smetana and Mozart. I really wanted to hear the Smetana’s Piano Trio (a Czech composer not often played), but there was an added surprise – the pianist Junhui Chen was the youngest participant in the 2011 Louisiana International Piano Competition in cooperation with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra (my hometown). All of the Juilliard students are so talented and have so much energy. On another evening, we attended a concert at Town Hall featuring the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra playing Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to “Candide” and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. All beautifully done, with encores to boot! On Saturday morning, we went to the International Center of Photography for Salgado’s Genesis exhibit. His photographs are phenomenal (Google salgado genesis images to check them out). And late Sunday afternoon in our own backyard so to speak, we took a tour of the Woolworth Building which has not been open to the public since prior to 9/11. The architect Cass Gilbert also designed a building I used to live in, so I was anxious to check out the interiors of the Woolworth Building. Worth a visit to the ‘Cathedral of Commerce.’
