Been avoiding my news feed for a few days since the elections. Saddens me to see the hateful & derogatory comments & statuses directed towards opposing party leaders & supporters. Fiji has spoken & they have chosen Fiji First to lead the country for the next 4 years. I wish them well. What is my reaction as a Christian and as someone who treasures my indigenous Fijian heritage & my traditional values? I choose to be like JESUS, the author of my faith - humble in defeat but strong in the beliefs, values & principles I choose to uphold. It is in JESUS life we see humility & faith till death & we are called to do the same. GOD has promised that He will be with us, He will not let anything happen to us beyond which we can endure. He has promised that those who abuse their power will get their just rewards & we must have faith that God does punish. In defeat we must not retaliate by violence or harsh words but we must be proactive. Proactive in the values we uphold, proactive in teaching our children our language, traditions & cultural knowledges. Proactive in educating our people & village folk their rights, how to use & protect their land, how to be self-subsistent & how to be street-smart in negotiations with the state. I have lived in two countries where its indigenous peoples, who through no fault of their own, have been displaced, have lost their rights in owning & managing their land & have lost their cultural identities. These two indigenous groups are the worst affected in poverty, diseases & quality of life in their respective countries. Let us together fight (honourably) to keep our traditions & cultures sacred for the sake of our children. Let us reclaim our right to our language, i tovo, vanua, na qele. Let us live our lives in harmony & responsibly with other ethnic groups who have come to call Viti home. Most importantly let us remember JESUS in all we say & do.Furthermore let us remember too that we are only passers-by in this world, that there is a land being prepared for us, much fairer than we can ever imagine. Beyond our fight to keep our culture alive, citizenship in heaven is ultimately what we must all be striving for. GOD bless my Viti. It is essential to employ, trust, and reward those whose perspective, ability, and judgment are radically different from yours. It is also rare, for it requires uncommon humility, tolerance, and wisdom.- Dee Hock Blessed week to you all...:)
