Been sitting on this thought for a couple of days because I wanted to think it through.. I think that Pope Francis was wrong when he said “If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch. Having listened and read the Pope, I know he was saying it largely in jest as an illustration but it doesnt change that his underlying point is wrong. The freedom of speech that allows us to express our faith is the very same liberty that must, by definition, extend to those who want to spread awful ideas.. Its uncomfortable and its not always nice but a day will come when I/we cannot express my/ourselves without the majorities consent.. Every time some one, even the Pope, tells people what they can and cannot say in the public arena, we edge closer to that day. Nothing anyone says ever should result in violence.. Whether that is a word against the Popes mother or a cartoon against the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).. I still follow the teachings of the Church and I still am more than happy to be led and be obedient to the Pope. I will do my best to never hurt another person with my words (whether written, sung, acted out or in any manner of creative ways) but its not my job to gag someone else.
