Been spending a lot of time on RateMyProfessor lately (if you dont know, thats a site where students rate professors) -- reading my own reviews, those of my colleagues on this campus and other campuses. Its a pretty great website, and really empowers students. (I wish we had this when I was in college). It gives you tremendous insight into how professors are perceived by students when they say what they really think in an unguarded and digitally anonymous setting. But one disturbing pattern is emerging. A significant number of the respondents brag about how little work they did -- it seems to be a point of pride for some college students that they never bought the book, never read a word, didnt attend class, never took notes, and still got a good grade in the class, as if theres a prize in life for avoidance, laziness, deception, broken promises, disengagement, dumbassedness, and sloth. O.K. then loser, I guess you win. I love the students who are hungry to learn. As Confucius said, I give a student one corner. If they cant bring back the other three, I stop teaching. If your goal in college, and in life, is to do as little as possible, I dont want to know you. Ill work with you, but I dont respect you. I want to associate with people on fire, eager to grow, willing to risk, dying to live.
