Bees sting Steeldogs The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs and Bracknell Bees were both looking to get back to winning ways. Sheffield were without Jeff Legue (injured) and Ashley Calvert (suspended) and started Dalibor Sedlar in nets opposite Alex Mettam. The game began with both teams looking to get an early marker on the board. A chance for Hirst came within 90 seconds which was padded away by Mettam. The Bees seized the chance to skate down the ice, with Antonov and Stead combining to feed Smital who scored. The next 10 minutes followed a similar pattern of exchanging attacks but with no result. Some good link up play between Hirst and Korhon resulted in Mettam trapping the puck. Tim Smith had two quick shots from the point but Mettam used his body and pads to save each one. A delay of the game penalty saw the Steeldogs have a one man advantage but again the shots from the blue line were not beating Mettam. There was a big hit from Payette followed by a solid open ice hit from Wood, which several Bracknell players didn’t appreciate and the Bees swarmed around Wood. The Bees got on with the game quickly after exchanging words and went down the ice to score their 2nd of the game, Antonov from Smital. Coach Payette called a timeout and got the boys to regroup. His words had an immediate impact as the Steeldogs turned defence into attack with a pass through centre ice from Bell to Korhon who lit the lamp for the first goal for the home team on 11:43. The Steeldogs were working their way back in to the game when Elliott was boarded by Bendik and had to be helped off the ice. Lloyd Gibson let his feelings be known on that hit and received roughing penalties and a misconduct for dropping the gloves. Bendik was sent from the game. The Steeldogs started the 2nd period with a 5 on 3 power play. In the final second of the advantage, Duncombe received a pass from Haywood and Wood and shot a bullet past Mettam. The home team came out intent on making Mettam work hard. On 22:17 Payette and Wiggins squared off in a grapple, Payette putting Wiggins down on the ice. Elliott then sat out 2 penalties which followed in quick succession, on the second infringement the Bees capitalised on the advantage, Wiggins putting the puck in the net from a Smital pass. The Bees were back in front 2-3. The game began to settle again until Waller and Payette exchanged punches with less than 90 seconds to go until the buzzer. The Bees would be taking a man advantage into the final period this time. Within 24 seconds of the restart Bracknell were on the board again. Spearing and Smital fed Foord who put the puck past Sedlar. Less than 2 minutes later it was Foord who scored again to put daylight between the teams on the scoreboard. With a shorter bench Brownley and Pattison were getting more ice time and Brownley worked hard to get some rubber on Mettam. But it was a good understanding between Korhon and Hirst that saw the pair make the 3rd goal, Korhon in the right place at the right time. Within seconds of the restart Payette and Hubacek were involved in a spot of roughing and Smital waded into the action; earning himself a game penalty as third man in. Sheffield switched net minders at this point, taking the under fire Sedlar out of the game. Again, during the resulting power play Bracknell took full advantage of the extra man and Antonov stepped up to score assisted by Spearing and Watt. Bracknell called their time out with just under 4 minutes remaining and gave final instructions to close the game down. But there were still chances for Sheffield, the puck skimmed the line from a wrap around and shots were snapped up by Mettam. A last hurrah saw the Bees skate away with seconds left on the clock and the impressive youngster Ivan Antonov score his hat-trick goal. The game ended with a Steeldogs 3 – 7 Bees score line, completing a weekend that Sheffield will look to put behind them quickly and move on from. Lewis Bell finished the weekend with less teeth, Craig Elliott didn’t return for the third period tonight so along with Jeff Legue, Coach Payette will be hoping for speedy recoveries whilst remembering who caused the injuries in the first place. The next home game will be next Sunday when we play host to Solway Sharks and we will be playing an all British line up. Brad Day will start in goal and there will be chances for several Academy youngsters. Cole Shudra will be hoping to add to his assist in Solway in the previous encounter. Come on down and support the Dogs Brit Pack.
