Before I forget anything I also wanted to remember my ancestors on the Union side at Gettysburg as well. They too were brave in particular on July 1st. Colonel Charles Wheelock of the 97th NY held his ground even though Confederate forces enveloped his brigade. He led the brigade on the field in the absence of his commander General Baxter. Colonel Wheelock was captured in the basement of the Sheads house in Gettysburg. Carrie Sheads, the ancestor of Tim Sheads took and hid his sword to prevent it from being taken by the Confederates. After his capture, he escaped back to his own line on the night of July 2nd. He was unable to locate his regiment until after the battle.
