Before NBMA, BGR and all of the many running groups, there were (and still are) the Marthas Vineyard Polar Bears. This group has been around for over 70 years and it is open to everyone. However, its mostly compromised of gracefully aged (but young looking, agile and fit) women who brave the frigid ocean waters to lead water aerobics and stretching....all while singing hymns and providing fellowship. They also swim and do beach clean up community service. Despite my loathe of cold and deep water, I was fortunate to join them yesterday. It was magical and I felt like I was a character in a Maya Angelou novel. I am writing this here because sometimes we (NBMAers) often indicate that because they dont see African Americans running races that means they are doing anything. Just wanted to show there are many paths to the goal.
